TEMPERAMENT OF THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

A sound temperament is of the utmost importance in a good companion. Temperament is inherited, therefore it is a direct result of the dog's breeding (genetics).

The character of the German shepherd dog is one of self-assurance, confidence and nobility. While a mature German shepherd dog will not wear his heart on his sleeve, he should be friendly and approachable. Strangers may be regarded with some degree of suspicion, but the dog should not be overly sharp or aggressive. Also, he should not shy away with fear.

A sound German shepherd dog will be an excellent companion for you and your family. An unsound one is a disaster waiting to happen.

Because of a desire to have a family protector, most people wanting to purchase a German shepherd puppy think they need a very dominant, aggressive dog. This is a risky and is the wrong choice for a family. A sound German shepherd dog are naturally protective of their homes and families without the excessive aggression.

A German shepherd puppy will start to show some awareness of their environment about five or six months of age, they will display a need to warn of approaching strangers. An alert dog and a few warning barks is all the protection most families require.

For some people who do need for more serious protection, a sound and balanced dog is still the best choice. A German shepherd dog can be trained in personal protection by a qualified instructor.

Remember, an overly aggressive or unsound dog should not be trained in protection, because it will be a danger and cannot be trusted. Anyone planning to acquire a personal protection dog should choose the dog and the trainer carefully, for a poor dog or a poor trainers can create a disaster.
